“First night of Hanukkah”

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights.

Each night, a new candle on the menorah will be lit. The middle candle is the “Shamash” or “Helper” candle, and is used to light the other candles. This is why there are two candles lit, even though tonight is the first night.

(Unfortunately the lovely creator of this evening’s window realised too late that she’d miscounted the number of candle holders on the menorah. There should be 8 holders, for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, plus the Shamach.)
